Gather the Ingredients and Supplies.
Before you start making jajangmyeon, make sure you have everything on hand. You’ll need Chinese noodles, jajang sauce or paste, onion, potato, bell peppers, cucumber and meat (optional). Additionally, assemble the necessary tools such as a pot for boiling the noodles, a deep skillet for frying the vegetables and meat (if using) and a spoon for stirring. To help with measuring ingredients properly, it is helpful to have a set of measuring spoons and cups on standby.
Prepare the Noodles and Chunsik.
Begin by filling a medium-sized pot with water and bringing it to a boil. Once it boils, add the Chinese noodles and cook until they become soft and flexible (this should take about 3-4 minutes). Drain the noodles in a colander and rinse them under cold running water for about 10 seconds to remove any excess starch. When done, use scissors or a knife to cut the noodles into smaller pieces, if desired. Place prepared noodles in a large bowl with 1 tablespoon of sesame oil or vegetable oil and gently toss them together to coat. Additionally, prepare the chunsik by mixing 2 teaspoons of jajang sauce with 1 teaspoon of sugar in a separate bowl until combined.
Cook the Sauce With Onion and Meat
Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until slightly softened, about 2 minutes. Add the meat and continue cooking for another 5 minutes until it is fully cooked. Pour the chunsik mixture into the pan and stir everything together. Cook until thickened, about 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. When finished, remove from heat and set aside.
Add Vegetables or Seafood to Your Jajangmyeon Sauce
Once the sauce has been cooked, you can add extra ingredients to it. This is a great way to make your jajangmyeon more flavorful andhealthy. You can add vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, bean sprouts, broccoli and mushrooms. If you like seafood, add some shrimp or squid to the mix. Stir everything together for about 5 minutes until all the ingredients are cooked through and evenly distributed in the sauce. Serve over hot cooked noodles with a side of pickled radish (danmuji) and enjoy!
Serve and Enjoy Your Homemade Jajangmyeon
Finally, it’s time to enjoy! Serve the jajangmyeon over hot cooked noodles and top with pickled radish (danmuji) for a flavorful dish.
